Tranny new, rebuild or deal with it?
I have a manual transmission on my '86 Civic that is leaking tranny fluid (I have been refilling it and it has synthetic so it's not running low nor is the tranny getting worn but the refill is a DRAG) from the gasket to the engine and from the seal holding the housing together (looks like and earlier repair was made on the tranny.
I want to have the leaks repaired soon so I can stop refilling it but I'm also considering that in the next year or two I might like to replace it since the 3rd gear synchro is shot. I'm debating what to do. I'd like to spend a little now and get the leaking taken care of but could it worthwhile to :
- replace with new tranny at the same time ($1500???)
- replace with used rebuilt tranny at same time ($800???)
- have my own tranny rebuilt ($???)
- just repair the leak and live with the 3rd gear issue as long as possible
This is a project car I've taken on so I don't mind spending a moderate amount of money on her to keep her going. She has 130K and I'm hoping for 500K but I'd rather not shell out ALL my money at once :-)
How much should just a reseal cost? Are there pros and cons to buying a rebuilt tranny vs having my own tranny rebuilt for me? Any reason I'd want a NEW tranny?
Thanks!
Elissa
