Have you thought about a turbo kit?
The B17 is a decent engine, BUT if you wanna go the naturally aspirated route, I think your better off starting with a different engine/bottom end like at least a B18 or B20.
The B17 is basically a slightly stroked B16 which have shorter deck heights than their bigger brothers...This kinda limits your maximum displacement and as we all know, theres no replacement blah blah blah...
There are a ton of stock B series engines being boosted putting down 250-300 HP (to the wheels) that run on pump gas. In an EF with this kinda power, 12 second ET's are pretty much the norm...

Yeah...I just think its almost not worth it to mod the B17 unless your gonna at least go into the head... I mean some boltons, intake, header, exhaust will probably run at least $800 unless you buy used. Then you get maybe 10 hp peak and maybe 5-8 throughout the rpms? Add a tuneable ecu and maybe get another 5-10 hp. Now your at about 165ish whp? This is decent and can be a fun little engine dont get me wrong. BUT, for around the same cost, You could have a b20/vtec and be alot faster and alot more fun...Or spend a little bit more and boost the B17...Just my opinion

if he adds cams and cam gears to advance the timing with some 91 gas he will have a good reliable street car and it will b fast enough to scare most racers and it wont break the bank it will b fun and can sell it at a reasonable price

Being hes coming from a V8 background, I just dont think he'll be all that impressed with the B17 and minor bolt-ons. If he builds the head up then yeah it would be pretty fun, but now were talking about a pretty decent investment into an engine that is eventually gonna hit a performance wall. The next logical step is to boost it or go into the bottom end.
If hes like most of us, he will need more power sooner or later and then hes gonna wish he got the larger engine or went turbo...
OP what are your thoughts? You still around?

i'm not looking to race, it probly won't ever see the strip or the track. it's almost fast enough now, i just want a little more. my friend has a 91 teg with the b18 in it, and i like how fast it is. it's a good dd. so if i take the b17 and through it in a civic that weighs ~400 pounds less than a teg, it should be plenty fast. and for that 800 bucks, i'd rather pick up an msd, performer intake, and a cam for the 350 in my rx7. 800 bucks in a small block goes alot farther than it does in these cracker jack toys lol.

Very true.Theres alot of HP to be uncorked on a 350. B series not so much...
On the other hand, $800 could also get you a b20 longblock($400ish),vtec adapter kit($150ish), and a tune($250ish)...
In a EF civic, this thing would be pretty brutal. Might give the SBC RX7 a good run!
But if all you want is a little more power, then do the typical intake, header, and exhaust...
