n00b question as above.
Please explain like I was a 4-year old--I'm not even sure if the #1 cylinder is on the distributor side or not.
thanks...

#1 cylinder is on the left (driver's side). There is a green two pin connector that needs to be shorted with a paper clip. On 4th gen Civics and a lot of others, it's located above the passenger side kick panel. With the engine at operating temperature and all accesories turned off, you look at the timing marks on the crank pulley. Off hand I don't recall if you want the red or white one. Someone else is sure to chime in with their input, though.

no one's prolly gonna help you, but what the hell maybe you'll return the favor by sending some customers my way ... its http://www.GBRTuning.com
the year of the chassis would help ... regardless, the cylinder closest to the drivers side is #1, put your p/u leading on the timing gun to that ign wire. On the crank pulley is a white mark this lines up with a slot mark on the lower black timing belt cover, when the light lines the white mark with the cover mark its 0 degrees or TDC exactly... the pulley has two other marks, a blue and a red, one means +16 advanced the other is +14 advanced. To move timing, loosen the s 12mm bolts on the distributor and slide distributor to move timing.
