NEED HELP SOLVING: MISFIRE AT IDLE
RECENTLY REPLACED CAMS, VALVE SPRINGS AND RETAINERS ON A B18B. AFTER START THE ECU REGISTERED A MISFIRE IN CYLINDERS 2, 3 AND 4. CODES 72, 73 AND 74.
WE TOOK DOWN THE TIMING BELT AND PUT BACK UP TO MAKE SURE WE GOT IT RIGHT. WE DID. MISFIRE AT IDLE STILL EXIST. THE MISFIRE IS INTERMITTENT AND ONLY OCCURS AT IDLE. THE CAR RUNS STRONG WITH NO APPARENT MISFIRE AFTER IDLE.
THE MOTOR HAS A NEW EXTERNAL COIL, DISTRIBUTOR CAR, ROTOR AND NEW 8.5MM PLUG WIRES. TRIED DIFFERENT SPARK PLUGS, NO CHANGE.
IDLE CONTROL VALVE OK.
PLEASE HELP

Does the misfire seem to go away when you rev it up...
or does it just shake more the higher your rev it...
if it seems to get better when you rev it up .. look for vacuum leaks
if it just shakes more when you rev it up
things to check:
make sure you have the firing order correct
make sure all the wires are properly connected.
swap out the old ignition crap for the new ones.
But it it's only happening at idle and not when you rev it up I'd look for leaks..
unconnected hoses, missing gaskets, things like that

FWIW, A quick search on http://www.deja.com in rec.autos.makers.honda yields posts listing causes as being fuel octane rating/type (oxygenated), incorrect spark plugs, crankshaft wobble, plug wires, damp conditions, and a few others.
THE MISFIRE AT IDLE GOES AWAY AS SOON AS I TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR.
I WILL TAKE YOUR SUGGESTION AND DOUBLE CHECK FOR VACUUM LEAKS.
THANKS DAVE!
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you have a cam profile that is on the wild side you will misfire especially if you are OBD2. I think any cam profile that causes a fluctuation in idle speed will give you a random misfire check light.

this man is correct...........all 96+ non-VTEC engines i have come across with aftermarket cams will set misfire codes due to the fact that the engine has a lumpier idle from the radical cam profile.
the engine isn't misfiring. but the ECU thinks it is........this should not affect performance in anyway you just have to live with the annoying check engine light on.
the only fix for it........do a OBD1 conversion...

THANK YOU FOR THIS INFORMATION
IT HAS GIVEN ME A LITTLE COMFORT THAT THERE IS NO REAL PROBLEM
BUT I NEED TO KNOW THAT THERE IS NOT SOLUTION WITH MY OBD2 SET UP (1996 RS)
I AM STILL WAITING ON CROWER TO WRITE BACK TO ME.
THANKS YOU GUYS FOR YOUR REPONSE.

MISFIRE AT IDLE.
the only solution is to swap out the OBD2 ECU to a ODB1 ECU.
to do this you need a 94-95 LS non-VTEC ECU and a conversion wire harness.
p.s. welcome to honda-tech......please try not to type in all caplital letters......it's really anoying......have a nice day.

almost positive that is what it is. get a obd2 to obd1 conv harness and a reprogrammed ecu meant for those cams and with the appropriate rev limit and fuel curves.
