Default Need help removing broken stud.

I broke a stud on my motor mount braket. It's cut flush so I believe I have to use a tap and drill to get it out. I used vice grips on the bottom but it won't budge. Can anyone inform me of how to do this process correctly. I did pick up a little 13 piece Kobalt drill and tap set but came with no instructions.

Thank you.

If you're going to tap it, you have to drill out the old bolt, and then use the tap and put in new threads. You could try an easy out, but if it's already good and frozen, you're probably better trying to just drill it out and tap it.

So in this kit theres two different things. A drill bit and I guess a tap. Do I drill the tap in the broken stud in the middle, and then take the drill bit and drill it in and that will cause it to come up?

First off what car, engine which mount. ?

You need an easy out to remove the broken bolt after you drill the proper size whole in the broken bolt.

If you broke a stud on the mount by the timing belt that's going to be a bit more difficult.

I would try and buy a replacement from a junkyard.

If it's on the tranny just leave it alone and only use the two bolts.

How much HP is the engine out ?

It's a GSR motor in a 98 civic coupe. The broken stud is on the Si bracket on the side of the timing belt side. I can't take the bracket out because I can't get the lower timing belt cover off because either the bracket is in the way or the crank pulley...

Yea I was afraid of that.

You need to drill the broken stud out. Try to dill as centered as possible, start with a small drill and work your way up in sizes.

You may want to use some cutting oil or something like Marvel mystery oil to help the drill cut.

I'm thinking about picking up a torch tomorrow to try heating it up and hopefully it will loosen up a little bit. I don't want to make matters worse messing it up with the drill bit kit that I've never used before. Think heating it up will help?

How much of the stud is sticking up ? can you get some vise grips on it the turn it after you heat the bracket.

Be careful with the plastic there.

The stud isn't sticking up at all. It's dead flat. I can grab the bottom of the stud with vise grips but it doesn't budge at all...

i think the torch would be the easiest way to get it out

heat the bracket around the stud and be very careful with the plastic
