Default Need help identifying problem with transmission or clutch..HELP!!!

whats up HT, my friend ran into a problem with either the transmission or clutch..

motor is a b18b1
tranny: y80 with LSD(stock)

heres the story:

Car was driving fine with no problems before this happened. He was driving in 5th gear on the freeway, cruising around 75-80mph..normal driving..not hammering it or anything.. when all of a sudden, he hears a bang underneath him..at the same time..the car pops out of 5th and car shuts off..he did not hit anything..so it just happened..

he coasts to the nearest exit in neutral and then pulls over..steps on the clutch and it starts just fine..idling and all..then he steps on the clutch and sticks it in 1st and releases and gases trying to start off..the car doesnt move at all..then he got it towed to his house..

all the gears are there when we shift it around, when we put it in first and release the clutch pedal the car doesnt move and has the feeling its gonna stall only if we release the clutch all the way..its like the clutch is not engaging..

has anyone ran into this problem...any help would be appreaciated..
