Default MY D17 BLEW UP

Hi all,

My D17 blew up on Saturday night, the Honda dealership i bought it from are saying that they will not open the engine to determine what happened.

All they can see is that the conrod is sticking out of the side block.

I heard a big explosion noise, and first i though it was the tire blowing up.. 30seconds later the oil light came on and the engine made a noise, i switched the car off and now it's at the dealership.

The car was services by the same dealership with my two mods on the car last year and have signed the log book, now they don't want to hear from me by the looks of it. The two mods are cat-back exhaust and a air intake.

Has anyone else experienced a blown motor on the D17's or any kind of other motor.

Regards
Lozani

Okay, I'll bite.

Lots of people have experienced a catastrophic engine failue, or "blown" motor as you call it.

How were you driving when this happened? Connecting rods just don't happen to fall through the side of your block.

What are your "two mods"??

how many miles on the car and what year is it?

....the redline is set by the manufacturer with this in mind. This is why my a6 has a redline of 6500 and my brother's B18C is much higher.

Most motors can handle whatever rev limit is and about 200 rpm beyond it.

I was driving normal...

The car has done 37690km and is serviced so regulkarly that it probably goes to honda to service a month ahead of schedule... I was driving the car normally 70km's an hour 3rd gear

This has put me off honda's i'm afraid although i still love the cars...

I have spoken to attorneys and they say i have a case because honda serviced my car with the two mods and signed the log book... Although going to court and arguing with a bunch of idiots is no way i'd like to spend my time..

I'm putting a second hand engine that's done roughly the same km's as mine and i'm selling the car and buying a brand new Subaru WRX...

If anyone else has heard anything like this happenign could you please contact me... Thank you.

from what i have seen here at the shop, d17's are the only engines we have had problems with...rod out the front of the block, weird noises coming from the bottom end for no apparent reason etc etc..

So you can confirm that others have had the same problem as me before?

Would you think that the steel used for the rods is not strong enough? I was thinking of sending the rod in for a Mettalurgy test, worth it?

i highly doubt its the material of the rod, being that all oe honda rods are the same material, but the rod ratio thats trash on those blocks, no other honda engine has had this kind of problem that i have seen. theres no reason for that to have happened to your block unless you never changed the oil or hydro locked it...or simply took it pass redline..but thats not your case according to you..so i would fight it..

you should call honda not the dealership but the manufacture and tell the customer rep your situation...they should replace your block no problem..maybe do a warranty on the block and you pay labor.. usually honda will just go ahead and replace it if you complain..

was it a d17a1 or a2? It might have been a weak con rod casting, but from honda, that would be strange. i have only ever seen 1 honda engine, a d16a6, blow up and that was because it was run out of oil.

Its also interesting to me that someone else here has seen a ?stock? d17 blow up. that just doesnt happen with honda's as far as i have known them.

D17a1 is the engine

As previously stated i have had the car serviced on a regular basis and the amount of oil that came out of the engine, i know there was plenty in it...

I have spoken to Honda Australia and they don't want to hear about it because they have to listen to the dealership in their own words...

I'm just buying a Subaru WRX next week and selling my car with a second hand engine in it.

Thanks for all your help.

its going to be kind of hard to figure out what happened unless they or someone starts taking **** apart and go from there. There could be many many possibilties of what happened, or just something in that cylinder was due for its time and it was just coincidence that it happened after u had your "mods"

No matter how much information you give us for car details and mods, we cant tell you what happened. You need to tear apart the motor and figure out what caused it.

What do you mean by an "intake" ? you had a cold air/ram air intake installed? new intake manifold? got your filter changed ? its possibly a sensor got messed up, sending the computer false data, which will give you bad air/fuel readings, messsed up timing etc etc...

same thing with the "exhaust" did you just get a 5" muffler welded onto the back? did you get an entire new ehxaust system? Its also possible that the exhaust you installed was way too small and enough back pressure to create engine damage, maybe they forgot/didnt correctly install the oxygen sensor.

But like i said, too many possibilites for people over the internet to solve
