I've got the SCC MSD Ignition Box, does anyone know if there is a safety chip to protect shorts so that if you hook up the wrong wires that it won't short out the box?

 

nope, but I had the ignitor wires inside the dizzy backwards and it still works, just wire it right!
big red - constant +
big black - ground
small red - ign switched power
white - coil negative
the coil wires are obvious

I think thats it...
