JDM Type R motors are NOT the same in terms of using the engine harness, etc.
For a JDM ITR swap you will need to use the stock Civic engine harness, injectors, and either an OBD1 DOHC VTEC distributor or re-pin the JDM ITR one.
ECU? If you plan on using the JDM ITR P73 ECU, you'll need a jumper harness since it has the OBD2 plug style, BUT even though the plug style is OBD2, the ECU is indeed OBD1. I had a 1996-spec JDM P73 ECU and I assure you it was an OBD1 program with OBD2 plugs.
I am not sure if or even when the JDM ITRs went OBD2, but I *think* it may have been as late as 1999 when the ECU plugs changed again like they did here in the U.S. One thing is certain: the 1996-spec ITR is OBD1 even though the plug is OBD2.
If you plan on using a re-chipped P28 ECU, then you will need to add a VTEC oilpressure switch onto the ITR motor. JDM ITR motors do not have the VTEC Oil switch, and the P73 ECU does not look for one, but the USDM P28 ECU DOES look for the VTEC Oil switch. VTEC will not work if you don't add this switch. Any switch from any VTEC motor should work - USDM D16Z6 (1992-1995 Si/EX; Del Sol Si), B18C1 GS-R, B16A, etc. so put it on and go.
That's about all I can think of for the JDM ITR swap. Anybody that knows for sure the OBD1 cut-off in Japan please feel free to post it.
I do know that the JDM ECU sucks *** because of the speed limiter

On the 5th gen Civic you need a delsol si bracket for the a/c unit.

When you said its not a direct bolt in swap, I thought you were indicating the engine mounts werent the same for the jdm gsr. thx for the itr info though.

Plug styles stayed the same as USDM. Programming stayed OBD1.
So from what I've gathered over a long time reading on tech sites:
96-99 = OBD2a plugs
00-01 = OBD2b plugs
(for all integras in all countries)
But I've never seen a JDM ecu from a 00-01 and compared it with 96-99.. so I'm not 100% sure.

ok thanks for all that info on the motor.. but what about my a/c question? for a usdm motor and my civic cx hatch? *begs* dont high jack my post!!!
Integras come with the P72 AC bracket wich WILL NOT accept the Civic's AC compressor. You can gt 1 or 2 of the 4 bolts in, but they will eventually break. You need the Del Sol P54 bracket.
