motor oil in tranny?
I just always assumed this is what you use.
We just got my brothers Nissan Maxima 5 speed rebuilt, and the shop said 'Make sure you put 10w30 motor oil in there before you run it!'
So I told my brother this..but he seems to think they're idiots.
Is there an actual manual transmission oil made? I know Honda makes their own MTF, but I don't think I've ever recalled seeing Tranny oil besides ATF in stores.
well, besides Redline products and what not.
Can anybody clue me in on what we should do? I'm inclined to believe the tranny shop...the guy rebuilds about 100 trannies a day at his huge shop.

All it says is to put 4.7 liters of 'oil' in the transmission.
So I'm assuming MOTOR oil.. but my bro is arguing with me.
It's pissing me off cuz I need the parking space to put my motor in, but he won't put motor oil in his car so he can move it!

Older ones used GL-5 gear oil. That stuff turned to taffy in the winter. I bet you just gotta look for some oil spec in the fine print of the manual.
Honda used to call for engine oil, once they started designing their bearings & gears for it. I believe Honda MTF is very similar to motor oil, with a little different additive package. So once that stuff existed, they started calling for it in the manuals.

I thought most manual trannys used gear oil, but the simple way to know is to call the dealer and ask (assuming the owners manual isn't more specific than you have explained it to be).

do not put in motor oil into the maxima's tranny. If my memory is correct, Maximas need GL4 rated tranny fluid. GL5 is too thick, shifting will probably be notchy and difficult. Maxima owners love to use redline mt90. if you live in harsh weather (cold) some people use redline mtl. hth
rummaged up some info. gl5 is too slippery not too thick, sorry. the site is about the 4th gen max, but 3rd gen and up should all be the same... just check the car manual.

What abour for our honda motors? My brother just poured 2 quarts of 10w-30 Penzoil (the yellow bottle) motor oil into his tranny for his 95 Accord. I was like WTF are you doing? He said honda said motor oil is fine for the tranny. I've used Honda MTF so far in my 98 GSR / Eg Hybrid. Should I continue with the Honda MTF or will it be ok to switch to motor oil? If it's ok to switch cheaper stuff (regular motor oil), then I will be changing the tranny oil every 2nd oil change (5-6k)
PS <> Even if not, I'll still probably change the tranny with honda MTF every 2nd oil change which is about once every 6 months
Got to keep the Hybrid in top notch shape
Thanks for any input!

Stick with MTF for your Honda tranny. There are additives in the MTF specifically for manual transmissions-motor oil is o.k., but MTF is better, it's worth the extra $$$.

correct, newer manuals suggest only using engine oil as a very temporary means until you get MTF.

if you have honda mtf use it.
If you cant find any use 10w30 synthetic but dont try to shift real fast or powershift.
as for the nissan, I think you should call the local nissan dealership see what they would use
