tranny-Gear oil OR motor oil
i just bought a gsr tranny off a friend and i want to drain the tranny... i went to autozone and was told to put in mobile 1- 90w 140... but a friend who came with me told me to put in 10w 30 motor oil... so my question is what do i use and which weight, and how much thanks...
o and i dont know what year tranny it says L4D on the case im thinkin its a 99

Do not put GEAR OIL in it...
Just go and buy HONDA MTF tranny fluid... if you cannot find it, try to find GM Syncromesh Friction modified...
If you can't find that either, go with motor oil, mineral or semi-synthetic not thinner than 10w... DO NOT use full synthetic oil!!!
10w40 or 10w30 is the best bet...
Just DO NOT use gear oil cos you will f*ck up the tranny... happened to ma friend... he fried the syncros in ONE MONTH after the oil change...

I love how the people at auto stores kept telling me to just use gear oil in my tranny when I was looking for the penzoil friction modified stuff...

they dont know anything...i had a d16z6 i was puttin in my hatch and it didnt come with a vtec solenoid and i went in and asked em if they had 1 there like.. theres no such part... im like ... ok....and walked out.. its the worst when u deal with chicks cuz i needed the driver side mount and they couldnt seem to find it shes liek maybe its under mitsu eclipse... im like probally not...

Yo stop.............................................. ................................gaer oiol will ruin that trans if u cant find honda trans fluid use 5w-30 motor oil honda trans do not do not use gear unless ur an S2000

Try not to use 5w-30 if you can because it is too thin. Use 10w-30. 5w-30 will work but you should change it out within a month.

Go with pennzoil synchromesh. It's the same thing as gm synchromesh friction modified, but only $4.99 at autozone.

i agree. some idiot put gear oil in my friends tranny after a service....didnt last a month before it crapped out

How can one argue with such compelling logic?
Three requirements for a proper manual transmission lubricant are:
1) The proper weight/viscosity

Yes...Autozone are full of complete idiots...I work for Advance and they're always sending people to our store to get things that we don't carry like factory only parts and just tell these people anything then we have to try and get some people to understand that somethings such as the tranny fluid they told him or her to use will completely **** your tranny up...Before I even worked at advance they also told me to try gear oil in my civic tranny I was like yeah no you're an idiot thanks though. Ofcourse Advance has morons working for them too...no one in our stores around here no anything hardly about imports.

i went to pepboys to get a part and they asked what kinda car i have... i simply said '98 civic'... the guy at the counter was puzzled... he asked me 'who makes that? chevy?'... i said 'no, honda'... so we get through all the menus... i tell him its a 98... i tell him what part im looking for and he says theres no such part... and i told him there was and he showed me the computer screen and i noticed at the top it said '2004 ford explorer'... after seeing that i just walked out

i didnt think the gm synchromesh would make a big difference in my tranny with no grinds.(type r with limited slip) but it shifts so much smoother now. i do not see why it couldnt be used as a preventative to a grind in a good running tranny. i will definately vote for you to use it.
