Default Motor - Hot start

Hi folks,

I am bit desparate with my Honda HF1211 lawn mower (motor GXV340).
The motor starts without any problem when it's cold but starting it hot simply doesn't work. I checked for any oil leakage but that doesn't seem to be the case. As soon as the motor has cooled down, starting is OK again.
Anyone here who has a clue about this?
Many thanks.

Bollie

If it would be a relais problem, what is the way to figure this out?

Could it be an air filter issue? Or would you expect that the cold start would then be a problem as well in every case?

A clogged up filter can cause an over-rich condition that will make hot starting difficult. Clean/replace the filter. The next time it won't start when hot, check for spark. If no spark, the ignition coil could be on it's way out. Make sure there isn't a safety switch that is getting hot enough to expand the contacts with too tight clearance between them.

Otherwise, could be a carb gasket leak, or the cab needs cleaning/adjusting, or too much ethenol in the fuel.

I had the same problem. When cold worked fine, hot died on me. It was the ignition coil. Repleced and problem solved.

Hi Perfectionist,
No sparks when starting hot!
So I guess I better replace the ignition coil. I don't think there is any safety switch on this GXV-340 motor (can't find any in the manual).

Hi guys,

I just replaced the ignition coil as some of you suggested.
Guess what; cold start went easily. Hot start ... problems again; no sparks.

When I stop the motor after running for 10 minutes and wait for about 10 seconds, restart usually doesn't work. However, when I restart it immediately (so without waiting the 10 seconds), the succes rate seems higher.

This problem is really driving me crazy.
Any further ideas or explanations?

Hi,
By the way, when starting, the motor makes a weird noise during the first few seconds.
See or hear for yourself below (between seconds 10 and 13).
This was one of the few successful hot starts.

Anyone with a clue about this weird sound (see video)?
Could a small starter solenoid produce such a loud noise?
Or would it be the starter engine causing the problem?
