Default missing v-tec

i just bolted in an si (d16) in my 93 civic hb. d16 motor, si ecu, si harness, si everything...., but I'm not getting v-tec at all. and my check engine light stays on. i heard that if your check engine light is on, your ecu goes to a safety mode and won't let v-tec kick in. is that true? if anyone knows what could be wrong please let me know. thanks.

VTEC still engages with the check engine light on. You need to read the codes dude. Any other abnormalities beside the CHL and no VTEC?

Edit: Oops, CHL should be CEL=check engine light

Incorrect. VTEC will not engage with the CEL on. With the CEL on, the engine goes into limp mode. It uses a static (rich) fuel map, no vtec, and changes a bunch of other things..

You need to check the codes. Its easy to do....take a paper clip and jumper the ECU plug..its green and is under the glove box. There should be two plugs under there...you want the one with only two prongs...not three. Stick the paper clip into each side and turn on the ignition to "ON".

Watch that check engine light..it will flast a code.

LONG flashes are the first digit, shorter flashes are the 2nd number..

so "FFFFFLLLLLLLAAAASSSSSH FFFFFLLLLAAAASSSSSSHHHH flash flash flash" is code 23.

there will be a long pause between the flashes...then display the next error code. It will repeate.

Here is a link to what the codes mean..

good luck...

He knows that THIS is the place that you go for info... **** the fact that it isn't a kill....

#1. check to make sure the VTEC solonoid is plugged in tight.
#2. check to make sure the oil pressure is high enough.

start there, and call us back.

Yeah, yeah, VTEC still works; depends on the code.

Maybe it is kicking in and you just don't notice it because it is a turd? It isn't like VTEC feels like a turbo spooling up or anything.

What are you doing here? This is a Honda forum.

Don't you belong on a FudBoard?
