Micrometer to measure stretch?
Instead of using a bolt stretch meter could I use a micrometer? Just measure the length to begin with and torque the bolts in small steps and remeasure several times?

Good question.
Good question.
You really need a stretch guage like this http://store.summitracing.com/...h.asp .The ends of the bolts are to uneven to get a good reading. The bolts have a c'drilled hole in each end for the guage to fit in.

Do you think the more expensive ones are better? Or is the proform good.
I expect the bolts to be uneven but I'd mic it before and after to detect the change only.
I read on a build page somewhere that they'd cut up a crank girdle so they could bolt down only 1 and 5. The girdle makes it hard to get a guage in there. I don't have an extra girdle so maybe I'll need to put on the oil pump and fly wheel end seal. Would that be enough to prevent the crank from moving while torquing the rods?

I have tried to measure rod bolt lengths before with standard mic.s before and it is nearly impossible to get repeatable readings.I have used the ARP and BHJ brand bolt mic.s but never the Proform.I have used several Proform tools before and they worked just fine.If the girdle is in the way just remove it, tighten the rod bolts, and reinstall it.

I've used the Proform before. It sucks. The gauge face (with the increments...not the pointer face) was loose and would move on its own. So much for a steady reference.
Also, the indicator wouldn't hold itself up under it's own weight.
In short, it was completely useless.
I traded up with Summit for an ARP stretch gauge and I've never had a complaint about it.
