major oil leak, ls vtec
just built my ls vtec, used all new gaskets and seals in an attempt to avoid such a problem as oil leakage, but it still seems to be plaguing me.
so the oil is coming from the driver side, somewhere around the oil pump, but it looks very dry. It is losing a considerable amount of oil, about a quart in 200 miles. the spray from the oil is making its way onto the underside of the alternator, the axle and rack and pinion, all over my driver side wheel well, and even my fender and driver side door have oil residue, and the complete underside of my car, there is evidence of oil making its way all the way to my rear sway bar
my question is where could this be coming from??
all of my belts are soaked except for my timing belt (fortunately)
it doesn't look like the oil pump, but i do see a little oil collecting around the oil pan (after i cleaned the surfacing and let it run for a few minutes)
i'm guessing it is most likely the oil pump because for the oil to travel that much it would have to be under pressure
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks

what you put on your oil pan gasket (new) did you tighten it too much? of you tighten it too much, it will crush it and wont seal correctly. i had this problem, the engine crankcase is underpressure forcing the oil out through the leaks in the pan gasket. i lost around 1 quart per 1000 miles, make sure you torque all the bolts the same, not too tight, i forgot how much (maybe 7lbs)
i torqued with a torque wrench, the thing is very little oil seems to be coming from the oil pan at all, it all seems to be coming from the crank pulley area, i just haven't gotten the chance to run the car with the timing cover off to see the source
another problem can be your seal on the oil pump? if you changed it, was it exactly lined up to where it was before? (if you didn't change it, that could be your problem)

I guess you'll have to take off the crank pulley and timing covers and have a look. Not much we can tell ya..
crank seal, oil seal, oil pan gasket (which its prob. not if its on the alt.) cam seal, valve cover seal. If its going on the alternator i would assume its coming from the top of the engine so check the cam/valve cover seals first.

that's what i'm gonna have to do. That is the only thing it could be, considering oil is being flung, and btw the oil is on the bottom of the alternator only, not the top, so it is definitely not any of the cam seals or the valvecover gasket, we'll see
