machinists/builders, take a look at this..
i go this motor supposedly ran fine. u see what ive found. i just wanna quick answer on what u guys think- is it good or bad block? im taking it to a machine shop tomorrow for a diagnosis as well, just wondering what u guys think
Well I don't think the block is "bad" but it certainly isn't ideal... it just looks like it chipped off some material there... which on a d16 with b16 rods you'd do on purpose... So I can't imagine it's that bad unless it did something major the second it happened.
did you ever hear/see it run?

no, i did not. the kid told me it ran before he pulled it. any more help in here??
i was told as long as it idd not crack anything it should be alright, and as long as it does not hit the oil ring on bdc. i need to get it x rayed to see if its developed a crack, right?

the machine shop will have this magnetic/uv stuff (i forget what it's called) to check for less obvious cracks. i'm thinking there's no way in hell that motor ran up until the kid pulled it, but that's just my opinion, i guess. i recently pulled what was left of a piston/rod out of my old d16, it was far less bent than that after it punched a hole in the block and shattered the piston skirt and rod cap.
i'm sure one of the machinests will be able to tell you if it is salvageable or not, but i'm guessing that whether you can or can't, he will tell you not to use it.

Yeah, I seriously doubt it ran. If it did, definitely not well. I can't believe as someone else said that there wasn't a hole in the cylinder wall from the sideload if he did run it.
Take it to a machine shop and have them Magnaflux, or use dye penetrant (probably what they would do) and find out if there's any other cracks around the chipping. Then they should be able to give you a good suggestion on whether its salvageable or not.

Looks like pics someone posted of a hydrolocked motor.
Are those silver marks on the crank counterweights areas that have been contacting the block also?
Before you pay a shop to do anything with this block, take some measurements on your own. Check oil tolerances, mic the journals, make sure it's square across the top, etc. If those things are out of spec, it won't matter if it's cracked or not.

the rod was bent so bad the piston skirt was rubbing the counter weights.. truthfully i never tor a block down i dont even have a micrometer here to look at tolerances. the block is from a 96 gsr so everyhtiong should be alright. thnx for the input
