Machining Rods and Bearings
Alright I just went to a Machine Shop where I plan on having my ARP Rod Bolts pressed in at, as well as re-sized. Now the Machinist(Who by talking to I could tell DEFINITLEY knew his stuff) said I should bring in the bearings I plan to use so he knows exactly what specs to re-size them to, instead of using the book which can be inaccurate sometimes,
Here's my question
I was going to check the Rod clearences after I had the ARPs since you will get different readings before and after, so how do I know what bearings to bring?,
I know theres a simple answer to this but obviously I do not know it, the thing that really is making my head hurt is the fact that measuring the Rod wont help me at all you know, I think I know what to do but Im not sure, This is my first engine build so I am lost right now.

if your machine shop wants bearings he just wants the rod bearings you are going to use on the rebuild weather it be factory honda bearings or or after market . from what we have seen at our shop the book tends to be very accurate in sizing on what we have done best of luck with your project
He said something about looser tolerances or tighters tolerances due to measuring one tight and one loose if done by the book or something like that, I meant by the bearings is how do I know what size to bring, since I cant check the clearences till after the ARPs are in
BY THE SIZE OF THE BEARINGS IM ASSUMING THE CRANK HAS NOT BEEN TURNED YOU WOULD JUST BUY STD SIZE BEARINGS AND THE SHOP WILL RECONDETION THE CONNECTING RODS TO BE EXACT ONCE THE ARP BOLTS ARE PRESSED IN AND TORQUED TO SPEC THE ROD WOULD THEN BE MEASURED THEN RESIZED TO EXACTLY WHAT SPEC SHOULD BE
Alright thanks alot.
Sorry bout all the questions but Id rather look like an idiot here then at the Shop
Does getting the standard size bearings apply to the mains as well, and yes this is the first time this block has been apart

Your machinist is not making sense to me. How does he know what clearance you will have without having the crank to measure also?
He should set the big end ID size equally in each rod and to the specs listed in his books. You then adjust the clearance with honda color bearings or use a one size fit all ACL

Sorry about that he said to bring in the crank aswell
I thought he would size the rods to the bearings, as I said earlier how do I know which ones to bring(yes I know the codes on the block crank and stuff) but it sounds like I have to get two sets of berings one to take to the shop and one to get the fit exactly right? I thought I had it but know Im confused again.
Can some give me like a step by step on how the shop does this and what to bring.

shop I took it too didn't ask for the crank
they've been in business for years and all they do it build racecars. Not saying their right, just wondering if they're going on this the right way (they're domestic muscle builders)
