lsvtec knock sensor
alright i noticed on my b18a1 block doesn't have a hole for the knock sensor. i am running a p30 chipped ecu right now so i can't run it without a knock sensor. i have heard about welding a nut to the alternator bolt for the knock sensor. i don't want to go with that method and do it right by drilling and tapping the alternator bolt hole to work with the knock sensor. i went on the c-spped site and they said to use a 10.9mm drill bit and a 12x1.25 tap. the problem that i'm facing is that i went to sears and ace and they don't have the 10.9mm drill bit or the 12x1.25 tap. i went on some site and found out that 27/64" drill bit is the same as the 10.9mm drill bit. if anyone can tell me where to find the tap and even the right drill bit can you please let me know. i'm trying to get this motor done by thursday.
Have you compared the thread length of the knock sensor versus the bolt that is supposed to hold the alternator bracket on? I'd much rather weld on the nut -- which is what I did. Any reason why welding isn't "doing it the right way"? It's easier and cheaper, too.
I don't see any reason it wouldn't work just as well (from the sensor's standpoint) as drilling/tapping. And I believe the alternator will be more secure with the proper hardware. For what it's worth, I spoke with the guy who sells the J&S Safeguard, and this is the method he recommended.
