Default LS/Vtec question

I'm sure this has been asked almost a million times, but I am wondering if I buy a CRX with a b18a1 and put a b16a2 head on it with p30 or pr3 pistons with the stock b18 crank and rods if it would still be safe to the stock b18 redline? also what pistons come in the usdm del sol vtecs? would that be the pr3? would I be better off buying new pistons from honda for a del sol vtec or buying some used pistons from a jdm b16a1 from a friend? would new pistons be more reliable at all, or would the extra compression I would get from the used pistons be worth it? oh and not that it matters or anything I would be using a 1 layer headgasget to bring my compression ratio to 12.8:1 and a b16 transmission

Holy ****, so many questions, so little time. First off, I wouldn't take that setup past 8000, and depending on how you drive, that might be too much. 12.8 CR? This is not a daily driver car... B16 tranny is a great all motor choice, but you need at least a factory LSD. Who's building your motor? I don't think you'd get 12.8 with those pistons either, but if you're looking for factory pistons go CTR (stamped PCT).

I used the zealautoworks compression calculator and it comes close to 12.8:1. I would be building the motor

ok so i'm on another forum of which they talk about this site alot so i decided to finally join.

i'm in the process of building a new ls for my hatch. i had an LS but it **** in my engine bay.

i loved the LS, i bought it pretty well built up ( don't know exactly all the specs) and i want another ls.

this time LSvtec, i never got to it on the old motor but now i'm ready. i want to try to make a quick LSVTEC with as many OEM parts as posible. all motor, i already have the block and tranny i'm useing and will be getting the head in about a month

i just want to know what would the best Pistons rods and crank to use? would all gsr be good and compatible cause i can get my hands on them all fairly easy

I dont know for sure, thats why I'm asking in my post above, but I would use p30 or pr3 pistons, they are OEM honda, and get a thin headgasget, that should bring your compression up in the 12.x:1 area if you are using a b16 head, it also depends on what head you will be using and how high you want to be able to rev it, but as far as I know all B series cranks are interchangable, but if you use all GSR parts for the bottom end (crank, rods, pistons) you wount have very high compression unless you get a thiner headgasget and some b16 pistons (p30, pr3) and the highest I think you could get would be about 12.5:1, but with a set up like I listed above with all stock LS bottom end parts (crank, rods) and some b16 pistons you could get into the 12.8:1 area if not higher, but you wouldnt be able to rev it higher than a stock LS redline.. I'm not for sure on all of this, none of what I said are FACTS, but I belive it is true, and that one of the resons I asked in the first place.

Edit, and it also depends on what you have done to the head.

If you arent touching the bottom end at all then I wouldn't spin it much over the stock redline. If you do want to then get some aftermarket rod bolts such as ARP.

My LS/VTEC sees 9000 all the time... my bottom end is built though

that would only give you a 9.3:1 compression ratio with a 1 layer headgasget and b16 head.. and I still wouldnt trust it over the stock LS redline. unless you use the gsr rods too, that would raise it a little bit (10.x:1) with the stock LS pistons, and I dont know what redline would be safe to go by either then.. I suppose GSR, or b16 depending on what head you use.

I would stay with the stock LS bottom end get a b16 head some b16a pistons and a 1 layer headgasget.. you get more displacement, and higher compression
