You won't be satisfied with the power vs. the money you spend.

Suggest turbo.

I'm sorry I have no info on a ls/vtec, but another great project is the b20vtec. Granted your probably already set on it and thats cool, just wanted to give you another idea incase it didn't cross your mind.

Here is a good lsvtec how to...http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/lsvtec/lsvtec.php, and a crvtec how-to (basically same thing)...http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/b20vtec/b20vtec.php
Here are some lsvtec dynos...http://www.importreview.com/d_1.8.html, and here are some crvtec dynos...http://www.importreview.com/d_2.0.html
As far as components...the possiblities are almost endless. It all depends what you are looking for.

The only difference between the crv block and the ls block is the bore size (crv=84mm and ls=81mm) so you will get a little more torque and horsepower out of a crvtec. With a crvtec, if you want different pistons, you are forced to get aftermarket cause there are no other OEM ones that you can use. However, with the lsvtec, you can use CTR, ITR, or GSR piston to bump the power a little.

Basically that's it. Just search on here and read a bit. There is an absolute ton of info on this subject...anything you need to know on either motor setup. If you have really specific questions just ask though.

I'm putting an LS/VTEC in my 2000 Civic SiR, for now I'm gonna run ITR pistons, and spoon 2ply head gasket. Later down the road I'm gonna drop the compression and go turbo. But C-speed racing has the best info on the ls/vtec. Good luck

I don't know about Spade, but LS/Vtec is not that costly. The power is good, but you should do pistons and whatever else you can while there. The more you do, the more possibilies you'll have. Balance everything and put springs in the head, now you have a 9k+ motor. LS cranks are very stout. They can take the abuse. Look into Z10eng.com for good parts and better way of tapping the oil pump than the usual. Have fun. I'm going to be underway in my conversion in may febuary. I already have everything, except the free time.

you're right but to make the LS/B20 rev high without infringing on relabilty is a much harder task. all those thing you mentioned above as well as head do cost $$$. and as usual its easier to say then do, right. not everyone is mechanically inclined or has as much knowledge or hook ups to make this a worth-while project.

I would personally sell the LS motor or swap and get myself a GSR swap which in the long run its much more cost effective.

first GSR motor + ecu will go for around ($1700-2200)...
sell your LS you get $400-800 for it. so that around $1000-1500 that you still need to dish out. but this way you do not need to upgrade the the pistons, oil pump, add the girdle, add the PCV, add the oil lines, or vtec head. (all that is around $1500) and you still don't have a proper R/S ratio or durabilty of factory built motor.

id say if your gonna build the head do it first before you put it on..itll save with down time...im sure everyone will agree wtih me when i say: PORTFLOW....as for LS-vtec i like it..my friends has it (in the process of breakin it in) with JDM ITR pistons and built GSR head with CTR cams expecting 13's at least...my other friends tells me that he can rev to 10k for fun...but i dunno bout that...
LS-VTEC
i have CR-VTEC ~ and take it to ~8k sevral times a day everyday on a stock bottom end planing to build it but still in the looks for a USDM ITR tranny..my old GSR's 3rd gear is almost toothless...but im still not sure if i wanna built my top of my bottom first...
