LS/Vtec in an eg
Hey guys im looking to do a swap in my p5 dx hatch and i really want to build a LS/Vtec. What i was going to do was get a b18b swap (LS) and then l8er on just get the b16 head. Then someone told me i will have to change some parts out after i get the new head. Like axles and stuff. IS this true? What should i expect to run into when i put the new head on? BTW im not installing the new head, i will have a honda specialist do it. Thanx for any help.
Axles should work fine but there are a few things i would normally change when building even the most simple LSVTEC. First get the VTEC head, then ur gonna need a VTEC ecu such as a GSR, P30, or a chipped P28. I would definately swap the tranny to either a GSR or B16 but either will be fine. If you keep the LS you will be losing power unless you are planning on building a really crazy turbo motor that can spool for a long time. When i have built LSVTECs in the past i've normally swapped the pistons too. I hate stock bottom end. Besides if you just use a stock PR3 head ur comp ratio is like 9.55:1 and a GSR head will raise you slightly higher to around 9.75:1. The best way to go is with some JE's and get ur comp ratio to around 12-12.5:1 I built my friend's LSVTEC last weekend and just used a stock B16 head with .25mm over PR3 pistons. Just that little change bumps up the compression to around 11.38:1. Just remember the basics to get the motor running from a stock LS to LSVTEC are... VTEC head, ECU, (tranny most of the time), timing belt and water pump are good to change, and ur oil line. Have fun and i hope this helps a lil!!
