what was the actual code? there technically isn't a thermostat code.

Yeah I've heard of this happening... apparently the computer has spotted condition that puts it into limp mode... it's not your thermostat... you'll need to fix the problem before your computer will come out of limp mode... check your distributor cap and rotor

Well, the thermostat is mechanical, so whatever you hooked up won't affect its operation. If it is stuck closed, you can test it... take it out of the engine and hang it from a wire, and submerge it in a pot of water (not touching the edges of the pot). Also submerge a thermometer tip into the water (not touching the edges of the pot). Heat the pot over a burner and wait for the thermostat to open, and note the temperature on the thermometer. Check it against the temperature stamped on the back of the thermostat. If it doesn't open, or if the opening temperature is much different than the stamped temp, replace it.

It could be also that you have the wrong thermostat for your engine vs. the area where you live, so that would be a good time to check that.

I doubt this is the only problem (if it is a problem), though. I have a feeling some kind of sensor is malfunctioning.
