Default Leaded gas, will it harm anything other then your cat?

Will leaded gas damage any of your engine parts if you use it in a car designed for unleaded gas?

There's an awesome article in Import Tuner Issue #067 by Scott Tsuneishi titled Tell the Truth: 2NR Reveals Some Astounding Facts The Gasoline Conglomerate Doesn't Want You to Know. Sounds like a cheesy title, but its actually really interesting. The author collects and reports on the analysis of some 7 high octane California gases. He also comments on the hi-octane boosters available (which are leaded -- anything over 100 octane).

Anyway, from the article that starts on page 50 there is a section called The damaging effects of using leaded fuel. It follows "The octane readings of unleaded gasoline are capped at 100-octane. Higher-octane fuels contain lead. Tetra-ethyl lead (TEL) is one of the main ingredients added to fuel to boost octane. TEL is a very toxic material. Lead-based gasoline was eliminated from U.S. street mixtures on January 1, 1996 (January 1, 1992 in California.) The following year, cars were introduced with the first generation of catalytic converters. Before you attempt to pump your vehicle with some high-octane, leaded gas, take note that the lead content causes damage to a vehicle's catalytic converter and will slowly poson the oxygen sensors. Leaded gasolines still exist, but they marketed for sactioned, off-highway events only."

Hope this helps.. check out the rest of the article too!
