Knock Sensor (code 23)
Well I started my b16a1 crx the other day and I got a code 23 which I believe is for knock. Kinda made me worry so I took another car to school and when I came home I checked the timing with a timing light. It was a little off, so I set the timing right in the middle of the 2 dots on the crank pulley. I went to start it, it works good, no code. Then I go to school the next day, make it about half way when the code comes up again. I really dont want to have a rod through my block, but Im curious as to how dangerous this is? any input appreciated. Note: I fill up with 91 octane if that means anything. Motor is bone stock internally, aside from type r oil pump. Oil level is good

the code will only come on when the knock sensor detects a sound (like knock) and tries to relay it to the ecu to pull timing. that is why you won't get the code on startup but only when you apply a certain amount of load while driving. i'm sure you'll be fine driving it, if its stock it shouldn't knock with 91 octane. get if fixed as soon as you can for some reassurance.
It could be that the knock sensor is defective. But before you go replacing it, have you done a tune up lately? A misfire can also cause the knock to go off. Also, check your motor mounts. Are your shifts aggressive? Thats really all that could cause the knock to go off. Hope this helps.
I have had a similar problem with my knock sensor. I use 92 octane and if the air temp is around 90 my cel light will come on even if i dont rev above 3k rpm. Timing is set to 16 degrees stock too. But when i check the plugs their is no sign of knock on the porcelen, so its possible that the knock sensor is defective. I have been wondering why it comes on sometime too, but also i havent gotten a good idea as to why it does comes on when there is no sign off knock on the plugs.
Well it has been hot here lately but I dont know if thats it. The spark plugs, wires, and full distributor have less then 3,000 miles on them. I have hasport mounts with the black (softer) inserts. All the times that the knock code has came on I have not been shifting hard, and have not hit vtec since I first saw the code.
