JDM h22a only making 115whp... help
Spent the last 2 weeks swapping a JDM h22 into a buddies 92 SR prelude...
We got a whole front clip. swapped in the entire h22a and harness in, swapped in the h22 P13 ECU, plugged it all in, it starts, it runs, no codes...
We removed the AC unit, installed an intake.
However, the car gteched a mere 115whp, and ran a 16.5 ....
I have a hunch vtec is wacked... when the vtec kicks in at 5000rpm, its SUPER loud, then it kinda fades out....
sometimes the vtec comes on and off right around the conversion point, its sorta hesitant... it kicks in, it just doesnt pull any harder.
whats up with that?
I added the 2 wires i need to for the vtec to run... what could i be missing?
-ive checked timing... 15deg.
-i've swapped in a new 02
what could it be?

did a few more things... see if this narrows it down....
Car hits vtec at 5000rpm, you can actually feel the car slow down a bit... the VTEC IS SUPER loud from 5000-6000rpm, then it sorta shuts up and starts to pull again til 7200rpm.
i ran a 0-60 in 7.8 so i would assume im losing that second between 5-6000rpm...
changed out the 02 sensor, made sure the oil was topped off, topped off coolant, pulled off the vtec solenoid deal, cleaned out the filter thing...
By-passed the little solenoid in the FPR vacuum line, no change.
Replaced the FPR with another h22 one i had... no change.
1 thing i have noticed..... the h22 cat had a sensor on it, with 1 white wire... its not hooked up.. should that be run to the ECU? what is that wire?

yeah, the engine soundslike it has problems. check compression and do a leakdown test also. the h22 cat sensor is an o2 sensor and yes it should be hooked up, but i don't think it would result in 115whp .

just finished compression test... (dry one ie. no oil down cylinder)
210, 205, 205, 210...
sounds good to me..
reason i dont think its anything mechanical.....
if i drive WOT and shift at 5000rpm and dont let vtec kick in, the car pulls harder.... vtec opens up... it just does nothing.

heres a better vid.

if you listen carefully right after the shift, you can hear the vtec kinda bounce on and off... and get super loud... ?

Sounds stupid I know but, how old is the catalytic converter?
When I did my swap I found that the car did the same thing. It would pull hard but when vtec kicked in it would kinda bounce off of it and then engage. Then when it engaged it would bog the car down. Ended up being that the cat had busted and was clogging the exhaust. So when I hit the vtec crossover all the exhaust gases couldn't get out fast enough.
Just a thought
Good Luck! <--------- You might end up needing one of these if you get too stressed out over it.

the sensor in the JDM cats is NOT an O2 sensor, its a temp sensor, it has only one single wire inside a braided sleeve, it does not hook into the ECU and on JDM cars if its left unhooked it brings on the cat light in the top left of the cluster but does not throw a code or cause the car to run in safe mode. Seeing as the motor is in a USDM car and there will be no hook up for the cat sensor wire plus you wont have the cat temp warning light on your cluster so just take out the sensor and bung up the hole.
