Default ►► Is this ITR head salvageable? ◄◄

Spun a rod bearing and tore it to bits.

The metal parts traveled to the head and i know for a fact the camshaft isnt salvagebale but is the head?

i was told by a performance shop that i could just lightly sand down the grooves so they arent protruding and run the head like that.

the only downside would be a slight loss in oil pressure.

what do you guys think?

i'm not a head expert but if if your sanded down any high spot and polished the journal I think you'd be fine running it.

my question is, how did that muc material get past the filter. i have tried using a head that looked much better than that and it gave us problems. take it to a cylinder head repair shop. i have seen a few that can weld it up and hone it out

Because filters suck. Ive had several motors with bearing troubles and each time I would cut open the filter and it looks clean inside and out! Looking at all the "gold" in the oil pan you'd expect the oil filter to be caked but it is not. Filters suck.

I just has the SAME exact thing happen to my GSR head.. was caused by a split second loss of oil pressure at high rpm.. .... anyway, the machine shop i brought it to did say you could sand it down, but thats like a bandaid fix.. he recommended align boring out the journals and pressing in new bearings (like a main bearing, just for cams) he also said that way if i wreck a cam ever, its a real cheap and easy fix to just replace the bearing.

Id like to know what kind of bearing he would use? Ive always felt the cam journals should be servicable.

if you had material in the pan and not in the filter, it is because the pickup has not picked it up. metal doesn't magically go from the bottom of the pan to the cylinder.it has to be picked up from the pickup and pumped through the pump and the filter, and then distributed throughout the engine. if the pickup had picked it up, there would be some in the filter.i have broken enough parts to know that they woul have to go through the filter first. my guess is that his damage was from lack of oil pressure, not metal pieces

Interesting considering there aren't really any "bearings" in the head to begin with. Are they saying you should have bearings installed?

Theres no need to state the obvious. Of course it would be picked up, no magic involved. We're talking about tiny bearing particles, not huge chunks of metal. They would be sucked up by the oil pickup/pump in a second.

no, orginally there are no bearings.. never said that, im saying is after they align bore the journals out its obviously going to be bigger than the cam... so theres a company (I think dura-something) that makes cam journal inserts... that are LIKE main bearings...get it?

BTW, I don't think that the gouging is from metal traveling up from the pan. That looks like galling. That would be from a loss of lubrication resulting in microscopic spot welds between the cam and the head, not fragments in the oil. I've seen this a lot in stainless valves that I used to work on.

Mine was caused by a bad oil pump, my head should be back in about 2 weeks. I talked to the machine shop and got some more info on it. The company that makes the bearings is "Dura-Bond". The only thing is they dont sell retail, you need to go through a machine shop to get them, according to the machineist, this technology has been around for a while. and he sid that any shop with a "small align bore" machine can to this.

Heres a link with large pics of my head.

Let me know how that goes! there's a good machinist in my area and i'll ask about it. do you know if they are going to have to align bore ALL of the cam journals and caps?

if the damage is contained to either the intake or exhaust side, they only need to do one set of journals and caps... otherwise they need to do them all. But no, they cant do just one individual journal... they need to do at least one side

If I could show you my head you wouldn't have a second thought about using yours. My exhaust cam locked up a few years ago. I hit it with some sandpaper to smooth the journals back out.

This was back in 04 I believe and I'm still using the same head and cams.

yeah, im trying to get ahold of the machine shop near me but they're not picking up. once i get a price or if they can actually do it, i'll decide then if i'll just use the head as is. DNR (performance shop) said it would be fine just sanding it down

Well, if money is an issue, and its not THAT bad.. dont do what im doing.. to clean, strip, valve job, journal repair, and mill the head so its flat is costing about $1000

I just had 2 of my cam journals cut and bearings put in from the timing belt being to tight. I got charged $60.00 per journal. But we had the journal cutter bit and bearings already. But your head doesnt look nearly as bad as mine.

interesting, my machinist refuses to do single journals due to the risk of not making them uniform. also, the machine he uses doesnt allow for it.

Its been making 629whp and never wore a bearing out yet. It had 1 exh 1 intake journal right behind the cam gears done. But if theres a problem with doing one journal it will be my head that screws up.
