intermediate shaft
What would cause an intermediate shaft to break?? I have recently discovered that the shaft completely broke in two pieces. I didnt realize the problem I had with the car not driving was the shaft because it broke behind behind the plate that covers the transmission opening. I guess kind of like the metal dust cover. I'll post a pic when I get a camera. I cant do anything except to replace it but... I just want to know what would have been the cause. Thanks.
Never seen or heard of any one breaking an oem one.Even people making big power just use the stock ones. There are some aftermarket ones out there and I don't know the quality of those.
lol. well, you'll get to see where it broke and see how clean it snapped when I get a hold of a camera.
I am kind of dumbfounded on it. That is why I posted this question. I would assume that I would have bent or twisted an axle before breaking this shaft.
Like I was saying earlier also, the only thing I can do is replace it, which isnt a problem but, curiousity kills. I'd really like to know what would have cause it to break all the way through.

i would think that I would have spun a gear, broke a cv joint or even twist the axle before I would have snapped that shaft. Of course after I pulled it out of the car, I thought, maybe the shop that put the engine back together put in one that was already damaged. I see some writing on it DC2 so it obviously came from a junk yard or something. Makes me wonder what happened to my original one.
EITHER WAY, what would have caused it to snap, assuming that it was a good shaft and not cracked or damaged before installation.

If it came out of a wreck it may have been already hurt.I have gotten a couple of ls engines that had the snout of the crank bent but the pulleys were fine.
ive researched ALOT about intermediate shafts and the worst i've ever seen one get hurt is bearing damage.
that is highly unusual. think about it- it's supported on one end by a bracket, so for that end that goes into the diff to see any strange angles is nearly impossible.
at any rate-
Yonaka makes an 'all-new' intermediate shaft, it's the only aftermarket one i'm aware of, and it's very nice. it's 109 + ship from streetimports.com and is IDENTICAL to a new factory one. i bought a new seal, bearing and circlips from honda to rebuild a factory one i had and the seal has the same numbers on it that the yonaka one has and the support has the same numbers cast into it as well.

Thanks for the info. I still cant see how it would have happened other than it was damaged previously. The shop that built the engine put it all together and I see that they didnt use my old one, who knows why they didnt. Probably lost it and had to replace it. Even still, piece is solid.
I'm gonna try another factory one and if that fails.... holy ish.... dont know what I'll do but, I'll keep that aftermarket one in mind cause its not easy to find these shafts.
BTW, if ya read this again....you ever get the vibrations out of your ride??
