Im installing a quaife, and i put the new bearings in all the way down.
my question was, are the bearings supposed to be put all the way down? or do they have to be flush with the top of the quaife.
im asking this because since i put them all the way down, i tried to find the correct shim size, but the gap is huge! im talking about a 2-3mm gap...
can anyone help me?

Sounds like your diff was manufactured incorrectly. It is supposed to sit all the way down onto the case. Call customer service for Quaife and find out what the deuce is going on.

space where shim should go

sorry if the pictures suck, they were taken on my cell phone
also i just read on my Helms...theres supposed to be a 2 mm Thrust Shim, mine didnt have that...is that why my gap is so big? do i still need to insert the Thrust shim?

If the case was never opened, there should be a shim in the tranny side of the case. It looks like a snap ring. That needs to go back in there and then you need to measure the clearance between, add that value to the current shim thickness, and order a new shim.
Make sure the diff is fully seated on the other side. Use a mallet and tap the differential to make sure its at its lowest point.

its seated all the way down, and that snap ring is still in there
i didnt see the thrust shim though, the 2mm one.
i take it i should put it in there?

Did you get a B16/LS Quaife or a GS-R/ITR Quaife?
Is that casing seated all the way down? You should remove the gear stacks when clearancing the diff.
Remove the driveshaft seal and then measure your clearance.
The edge of the teeth on the final drive should sit slightly above the clutch housing seam. If it's more than 1/16", then the diff isn't seated into the casing.

i got the gsr/itr quaife
i still have the gears sitting out, so those arent the problem, and yeah you are right, the final gear sticks out just a little over the seam of the housing.
the casing is all the way down, but not bolted down.
my main concern is that 2 mm thrust shim... is it still supposed to be in there?

The shim must be installed in the gear housing. They make different sizes from 1.05mm to 2-somehting mm's in thickness. The shim must be 80mm in diameter. See the service manual in the differential section for the B18B1, B16A, or D16 transmission for the listing of sizes and part numbers.

the clearance is supposed to be .004 right?

If you have to use more than one shim, then you probably have the wrong bearings on the diff. What was the part number?
