bearing question
this might be a very stupid question but im very confused on how to find out what size bearings you need for your rod/crank bearings... like i see that you can order acl bearing and such but how do you know that there gonna be the right thickness or not if someone could guide me and help me out on this itd be appreciated. ive been searching and just cant find the answer ive been looking for and if someone would like to pm me about going about this thatd be appreciated also thanks
buy the Helms factory service manual. it lays it out very plainly.
the basics: find out what size bearings/clearance your motor had from the factory. get hold of some new ones in that size. measure the clearances. if in spec, reassemble. if out of spec, replace bearings with next size up or down until in spec.
i used plastigage to check my clearance. bore gage and mics are better.
if the journals need to be remachined or are badly worn you'll have to account for that when sizing the new bearings.
honda color codes their bearings which makes things confusing in one sense and more simple in another. this is why the charts in the service manual are so important.
