Default Intake designs, how do they affect performance?

I had a short ram intake and a K&N xstream filter. I also had the 2nd CAI piece attachment. I didnt want to run a full CAI durring winter so what i did was cut that part, so the filter is aimed down towards the bumper.

That spot where the pipe enters the bumper area, i cut away, so the filter could fit 1/2 way in there. (right by the fender liner)

However, are most intakes tuned to work efficiently? I know im still sucking Cold air in, but its not all the way down by the bumper. However im wondering if this will negativly affect performance.

Reason im asking is, ive been reading that modifying the OEM airbox, and removign the resonator loses around 2hp on most Type-R's. This makes me assume even if your pulling in cold air, the intake has to be tuned to work well. Ill post pics when warmer.

Ive noticed at times smoother accelleration, and at times worse.
