I was recently in a debate with a "know-it-all" and I need a question answered. When over advancing ignition timing will the ecu compensate and actually retard the timing a bit to prevent detonation? The "know-it-all" says it will, I say it wont. FWIW the car is a 95 b18b teg. TIA
In '95 the B18B didn't have a knock sensor. Only the GS-R (B18C) had one.
I don't think its quite correct to say that the knock sensor does the adjusting.
The timing goes according to its map, either way. It assumes the base timing is set to spec, so if you set your timing a couple degrees advanced, then the whole map will be moved up the same couple of degrees. IF IT WERE A GS-R then the knock sensor would be able to pull back the timing whenever it hears knocking. It doesn't pull back the whole map, & it doesn't remember to stay back for long.
