Default ignition timing

I have a question about timing. I know how to da. the motor is a 94 gsr. stock timing is 16 btdc. is it that to advance timing you must go toward zero or up past 16 say like to 17 or 18btdc. I belive that since 16 is btdc you must go toward zero which is also toward atdc to advance timing or am i thinking backwards? please help me clear this up.

its away from zero. for ex. on your engine, 16 stock, 17,18,19 would be advanced and vice versa.
