ignition timing
hey i'm just wondering how you set the base ignition timing on a 99 civic stock d16 sohc non vtec 5spd where is the timing marks and what do i ground out to disable the computer? and what should the base ignition timing be?
The mark that you are looking for is on the crank pulley, its the red mark. To disable the ecu you need to go to the right-hand side of the dash and look for the plug just put a paperclip in the plug and set the timing. Do a search under timing and it will take you step-by-step to set the timing..
The plug you're looking for under the passenger side dash is the same plug you use to check ECU codes. Short it out, start the car - check engine light will be on, no worries though.
Use a timing light hooked up to the #1 cylinder. Shine it down towards the crank pulley. There is a pointer on the timing belt cover that you look 'through' to see where the timing mark is. There are 3 red marks - the center is stock setting with the outter two being + and - 2*. Loosen the distributor a little and rotate to achieve what you want. I'd put a reference mark on the distributor and the head just to show where you initially were.
