Ignition timing question...........
I have an 88 crx si d16a6. What degree is the timing to be set at. Everyone says look at the label under the hood. My car has no label. Aftermarket hood on it now.
Also what is timing for a d16z6? And a d16z6 head on an a6 block? Which line on the crank do I use. I am using an ignition advance timing light.

There are a total of 4 marks on the crank pulley. You will want the timing of #1 (cylinder closest to the crank pully) the on the middle of the three that are grouped together (red mark if the paint is still there0. The single mark iby itself (white) is to set top dead center (TDC) when setting up the cam timing (during timing belt replacement). Be sure to short out the timing point, usually on the driverside fender (yellow cover) or under the dash passenger side. Use a paper clip to short out the two wires. This makes the computer go to base timing. If you do not short these wires the timing may be off due other engine parameters. Questions?

Ok. What is the degree do I set it at? You know an example 12 degrees before TDC. I need base timing. I was setting it at the mark farthest away from the other marks and yes I did use a jumper. I just do not know what timing is set at.
Thank you for all the info.

White mark is 0 degrees
The mark closet to 0 is 14 degrees BTDC
The mark farthest is 18 degrees BTDC
and the mark in between them is 16 degrees BTDC, which is where you want it set at for base timing @ ~750+-50 RPM.

Re: Ignition timing question........... (TurboSmart)
Ok, I'm confused now. I'm trying to set the timing on an '87 CRX and I'm gonna have to change the timing belt also. I want to get it running first tho before I change the timing belt in case thats not the only problem with the car.
So, you set it to TDC and check that the distributor is correct ? Then line up the middle timing mark on the crank pulley to the mark on the block and the cam gear mark up. Then it should start right?
Also, if the alternator isn't connected the car will still start right? I need the bolt that mounts it and like I said before I don't want to go out buying parts for a car that might have a myriad of other problems.
