How Honda gets those transmissions so LIGHTWEIGHT!!!
Hey guys...I have been asked the question of: "How can I lighten my internal transmission parts," on a weekly basis for the past couple of years. Well the answer is finally here...well not quite. Most of you never get to see the insides and innerworkings of a manual transmission. Nothing to crazy but, when it comes to weight savings...Honda has it down. We had the pleasure of rebuilding an Insight transmission for a local dealership recently and I thought I would share the little tricks that Honda has for lightening this transmission.
Ring Gear
Countershaft opened up
Selector Hub
Lightened Gear
Forks that have been hallowed out
Reverse idler gear and shaft
Drain and fill bolts...NO they are not missing the magnets

Intriguing!
However I wondered how long it would before Honda started turning everything into Swiss cheese!
The only thing left to do now is to make the casting thinner thus reducing weight!

looks like the 04-06 TL transmission gears in the MT. but the dam thing is still heavy to man handle it out of the car with 1 person.

Just wanted to share some of the cool things that are done behind the scenes....This transmission was extremely light...We have a 2 man lift policy at the shop here...and it wasn't even necessary!
The new Accord V6 manual transmissions also have the same done to them...not as drastic but, it is still present on a few pieces.

I wonder if it's for general weight loss or in order to lower inertial mass.

I am thinking both...the way Honda does things sometimes

Re: (GearSpeedEF7)
Question:
Are 'normal' counter/main shafts crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside from the factory anyway? Did honda just drill out the soft center? or are 'normal' shafts hardened eqaully throughout?
