Default How hard is installing a camshaft?

How hard is installing a new camshaft? Is it within the bounds of someone who's never worked on an engine before? Or should I look to someone else for some help? Also, what all would I need to do it? Sorry for the newb question.

The actual installation is pretty straight forward. The hard part is getting the engine timed right. If you've never done it before, you can easily eff it up. The hardest part I found for me was setting the valve clearances. You'll also need to get it tuned so you can take advantage of the higher lift and duration (airflow). You also need to think of getting better springs/retainers if you are running anything bigger than a CTR camshaft, and they are a must if you plan on revving higher than the factory rev-limiter (a lot of cams make power higher up in the powerband). What engine are you running? And what cams are you planning on swap in??

You'll want aftermarket springs and retainers for that cam. Ask Delta who they recommend.

How much would springs and retainers run for something decent? Maybe so I can take the motor up to 7.5k where the cam is still making power?

the only way to see if the cam is still making power would be to strap it to the dyno and see it go to 7.5k

springs retainers and whatever, just depends on what you like and what your budget is like

Portflow makes some good springs and retainers at a decent price.

I agree with the post above me...you gotta get it on the dyno to see where it makes power, and where it drops off at.
