Default How does an LSD work?

I was just wondering how an LSD works? How does it know which wheel is slipping and which wheel is gripping? Thanks for your help!

I don't think anyone knows how a helical one works. I've heard explanations and all sorts of descriptions, but it just seems like regurgitated info that nobody understands. I looked at diagrams and even took one apart. Maybe I was missing something, but it just went right over my head. Good luck with that one.

The clutch ones are easy to explain, but I don't know how to and so I'll leave that to someone else.

getting back to the situation in which one drive wheel is on the ice and the other one has good traction: With this limited slip differential, even though the wheel on the ice is not able to transmit much torque to the ground, the other wheel will still get the torque it needs to move. The torque supplied to the wheel not on the ice is equal to the amount of torque it takes to overpower the clutches. The result is that you can move forward, although still not with the full power of your car.
sound like, it transfers power from the wheel that slips, to the wheel that grips.

LOL. very true. All I know about the Quaife is that it works and uses some sort of gear face slip angle / coeficent of friction voodo. Someone tried to explain it to me once and it just made my head hurt.

The clutch types are pretty straight forward though.

A 1.5 way locks completely under acceleration and partially under deceleration while a 2 way locks completely under acceleration and full under deceleration.

ok so it sounds like a 2 way is clearly better. whats the catch? Howcome most aftermarket LSDs are 1.5 way - Quaife, Spoon, well even OEM too.

For a FWD car, a 1.5 is better. For a RWD car, that's a different story... I started a thread yesterday regarding this issue: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=427817
