how to do timing on b16
Here's the process for a b18 engine, i'm guessing it's probably the same for a b16. Might wanna 2x check first. The process should be the same though.
1. Connect the timing light to the #1 spark plug wire (closest to the t-belt) and loosen the 3 bolts on the distributor.
2. Then find a green (maybe it was blue?) rubber harness underneath the passenger side kickpanel and pull out the connector. Pull out a paperclip and stick both ends into the connector terminals to jump it.
3. turn on engine
4. Shine the strobe onto the crank pulley
5. Look on the lower t-belt cover, should be a little pointy notch thing sticking out
6. On the pulley, there will be 3 marks close to each other, they are black, red, and black. Further down the pulley will be a white one. It'll make more sense when you actually see it.
7. Rotate the distributor until you get your desired timing. The marks on the pulley will move as you rotate the distributor. If you line up the notch with the red mark, the timing is at 16 deg. btdc (factory setting). If you line up the notch with the black mark furthest away from the white one, it's 18 deg. btdc. (Advanced) If you line it up with the black mark closest to the white one, it's 14 deg. btdc. (retarded)
8. After everything's set, tighten up the distributor, double check the timing, put everything back and you're done.
It's been a while since i last checked my timing, but from memory it sounds right. Factory specs are 16 deg. btdc +/- 2 degrees (at least for a b18). Let me know if you have any other questions.
