A total noob question.....about timing

Default A total noob question.....about timing

After My b16 starting bogging and running bad..... and black stuff running out the pipes.

I wanna check my timing,
So.
The #1 plug wire is the bottom left (looking at the dizzy)

then I start the motor, and point the light where ? The crank pulley ?

Yes the timing marks are on the crank pulley, there is also another (pointer) on the plastic timing belt cover (you will need). Those motors generaly run well at 17 degrees advance. I would set it there.

I dont see any timing marks.......do I need to take anything off the motor to see the marks ?

no, you just need to know what you are looking for. there are marks on the pulley (one is pink if i remember right) and there is a solid line that is raised on the timing belt cover. point from the back of the car down at the pulley

ok....I see.....so at idle it should be right on the marks...right ?
