does anyone know how difficult this task would be and is it necessary. i've read in a mag that everytime a clutch is replaced it is necessary to remove the seal. but not sure if this is true and worth the trouble so, i'm seeking the advice of others. thanks.
I think the only things left to remove after the tranny and clutch/flywheel/pressure plate are gone is the oil pan. I think once the pan is off, you can slide out the main seal and put a new one back on.
I could be wrong though.

If it is not leaking now, don't replace it even if the clutch is already out. If it's leaking now, you must replace it as it will mess up the clutch. Just pull the cover off. (You may have to pull the pan completely off to do this or at least loosen it enough to pull it down where it attaches to the rear cover). Then have a new seal installed.
When you say main seal, you are talking about the seal in the ENGINE that keeps engine oil from coming out where the crankshaft exits the block. If you have oil on the front of your trans, that seal is called the main shaft or imput shaft seal. Once again, if it is not dripping on the ground on a regular basis, I wouldn't mess with it. All those seals will sweat a minor amount of oils thru the years. No big deal. But if the leak on either seal is so bad that it throws oil all over the place and seaps onto your pressure plate, then it'd time to replace them. Sounds like you're OK.
