Bad Rear Main Seal!??!
OK so i just removed my tranny to install my new clutch, anyway...there was a bunch of crud on the bottom part of the bell housing on the tranny - i'm not sure if it was oil.
So i remove the flywheel so that i can go get it resurfaced, and low and behold...it looks like i have a bad rear main seal. I'd just like your opinion's as verification..
IS THIS A BAD REAR MAIN SEAL!?!??!
If so...what would be the easiest way to replace it?
Do i need to remove the oil pan to replace it?
And how the hell do i pull it off?

take those bolts off and change the seal
good insurance since those are rather inexpensive, but a bitch to do later on when the tranny is on

oil pan doesnt havta come off... rear main seal is only $30 some dollars from honda i put all new seals on my b16 b4 i put it in my civic... haynes manual says to remove the assembly but u dont havto.. i used a hammer and a punch to get the old seal out (hit it lightly so one side goes in and the other side pops out and pull the old seal out) and just put a coat of rtv sealant around the seal and hammer the new seal in with a flat wood block overtop the seal so the seal will go in even... check a haynes manual its easy

Let me give you some advice. The key to a successful rear main seal install is to make sure you have the clearance of the back of the seal per HOnda specs. Trust me on this.
Please see the middle of this thread where you see my torn rear main seal.
Any questions, send me an IM.

uly
just take the 10 or 12 mm bolts around the main seal and the plate with the seal will come off
with the plate off just pop the old seal out and put the new one in

You removed your tranny before right? To install a D16Y8 tranny?
Search under BauleyCivic, he had the same problem when he kept pulling his tranny.

Oil pan must come off to do this as the housing is bolted to the oil pan.
To do it right, you should pull the pan, and the seal housing and make sure the gap in the rear of the seal is in spec with the helms manual.

if you have a drill, make a tiny hole in the center of the seal. then take a screw and screw it into the hole, the seal will start to come out. it works!!!!!!!

Then how do you set the gap without taking the housing off?
What pump?
