Default How do I mic the crank?

OK, here's the deal...MY eagle rods didn't fit both ends, so I had the machine shop resize both holes(big and small). Now, I remember somebody saying that eagle made their rods to utilize the factory honda #2 bearings on all of them...Now that they resized the big end, I'm gonna need to get different bearings...

How the hell do I mic the crank to find out what size main and rod bearings to get?

You don't mic the crank to find out what bearing shells to get, you have to plastigauge them.

You mic the crank journals so see if they are true.

enjoy.

for the rod and main bearings do i have to order B18C bearings or can i order B16 bearings instead.

mic'ing the crank is micropolishing it wich takes out grooves in the crank and you can mic a honda crank because of the way they are made. you will just throw bearings all day.

If you are using "stock" honda bearings the Honda "Helm" shop manual will list the journal diameter for the crankshaft and the bore diameter for the rod. This also applies to the piston pin and the pin hole in the rod. The crank journal and the piston pin can be miked with any good mike reading to .0001". The bores are usually measured with a dial bore gage, using a good honing oil a a lubricant for the bore gage. with out the lubricant the reading will be a few ten thousanths off.
This is really a job for a machine shop. Final fit-up is done using plastigage to measure the oil clearance between the crank and the bearing surface. When finally assembled the engine should turn over easily if the clearances are correct.

mic'ing is not micropolishing, its using a micrometer

where did they get polishing the journals from mic?? anyway you measure your journal diameters to determine what condition they are in and whether they are within service limit and to determine what size bearings to use - this is a part of blueprinting a motor, the stock bearing code is stamped into the bottom of the block where the oil pan meets the block. after micing you shuld hope that you can stick to the factory bearing codes. micropolishing is really more like doing an align hone on your crank that needs refurbishing, it really isnt a performance enhancer just bringing crank backinto specs. now baancing and lightening will bring you some gains. lightening the crank helps in a few ways a) less rotational mass (inertia) b) less vibrational distortion - people believe this will save your high revving motor and oil pump from stress failures like from extreme cavitation c) with reduced mass comes reduced surface area which leads to reduced windage loss - this is good for 5 -10hp on race motors. d) less aeration of oil e) less crankcase gases to evacuate from reduced surface area.

another fucked up thing about my crank is that the journals are scored from a couple spun bearings...It was too close to cut, so they had to weld it, then cut afterwards...I'm probably gonna be running Federal Mogul rings...

you heard right, D rods = #3.

Search button is not a option, a requirement.

Get a new crank man...Honda Bearings 'oWnZ JoO'
I personally wouldn't do a ton of machining on a crank, when you get get 'like new' or even new ones for a couple hundred.
