ok guys i have a few questions about the hondata system. i am currently running an obd 1 b16 w/str block guard, spoon headgasket,170 degree beck thermostat, ctr cams,aem gears(intake advanced 3degrees/exhaust retarded 1 degree). i also have an eric's racing chipped p30. i am unhappy with the ecu, it hits vtec too early(4700 approx) and i can feel the vtec weaken at high rpm's. so now i have a p28 and i have just spent 2 hours reading about the s100 and s200 systems. they sound good and all but i have a few questions on installation (wiring/difficulty), tuning(ignition/timing settings and proper vtec switch over). i don't kno ALL about hondas and i don't want to come off like it; however im not a novice. thanks for all of the help.
1. when installing the hondata chip i have to soutter it in. is it true that i cannot replace the cover back on the ecu?
2. is installation the same as installing an apexi safc/vafc(i.e. i have to physically cut into the harness)?
3. what is the reccomended tuning if i were to purcharse a s200 unit (i want to be able to have my vtec switch over at 5700rpm) what im looking for is the reccomended tuning for both maps.the hondata web site was talking about taking a 99 si and converting the obd 2 ecu to the obd 1 and retarding fuel/ignition timing(5000 and below) at full throttle and retarding fuel BUT advancing ignition timing (7000+) at half throttle which allowed the si to climb a hill in 5th gear when normally the driver would have to downshift to 4th.
4. what im really looking for is something that will improve my overall performance when i race, but also be able to re-program the settings to favor a daily driving application(saving fuel so i don't have to visit my local cheveron all of the time and no added stress on the motor, im tired of swapping motors) so the question is is hondata really what im looking for or is the apexi program better fitted for my car or should i slap my p30 back in and "live with it"?

First off, give Doug McMillan a call at Hondata and talk to him. I've never had a problem getting him on the phone (when he is there).
As for your questions, here is what I understand it;
1. You should be able to solder in a low profile socket for the replacement chip that goes inside the ECU. Keep in mind that the s200 system has an external box that is part of it. A s100 is totally internal and nobody would know that it's been done (like a Referee).
2. I don't know anything about the Apexi system.
3. Unless you want to spend a whole bunch of money for equipment, you normally take your car to an authorized dealer / tuner and they set you up with the "map" that is specific to your needs.
What you have to know is that normally the Hondata isn't programable on the fly. When you leave the tuner, you have the ROM programed and installed. If you want to change the program, you have to have another rom programmed (burnt).
On a dual use car, I'd recommend that you have the tuner set you up with two different roms. One is your normal driving profile and the other is the "race" one. You could then swap them as you desire.
What I'm planning on doing is have one specifically programed to pass smog, then another for higher performance.

you don't physically solder the chip in, you solder a socket for the chip so you can swap them in/out when needed. there is no cutting of the harness involved like there is with a vafc/safc. you can put the cover back on the ecu. Hondata is great for a daily driver

Check out the website. You should be able to get it there.
By the way, welcome to Honda-Tech.
