HELP ME PLZ.....
Ok, I have a 98 Civic EX coupe (d16y8 1.6L) and I did a 5spd conversion to it. My problem is that everytime I try to put it into any gear, it has the same amount of side-to-side play as if its in neutral. For example, I push it forward where 1st is suppose to be, i hear the clicking sound when I push it forward, then I can like move it across to 3rd or 5th. Why is it like this? Shouldnt it lock up when its in gear, meaning it shouldnt go to where 3rd or 5th is suppose to be right? There should be only a little amount of side-to-side play, but not that much. Is this normal or is my trans messed up? Could anyone plz help me? Also, I dont think my trans has fluid in it nor did i even bleed the clutch yet. But I was told that it doesnt have anything to do with it.

I always assumed there was a shift guide plate in the 'H' pattern that sat underneith the gear shifter that kept you from being able to move sideways from 1st to 3rd to 5th or 2nd to 4th to reverse. Maybe someone can confirm/deny? I don't think what he's experiencing is normal at all.
Definately not normal at all, although I've experienced the exact same scenario on a customer car at the shop I used to work at. I test drove his car for a misfire situation and noticed the shifter doing exactly what you describe...although "I don't mind it" was his reply to my inquiry about it, lol.
Explain to me exactly how your shift linkage looks (i.e. is it two bars that run to the transmission, one being attached to the side of the tranny, and one being attached to the gear selector on the tranny?). Also I'd check to make sure the gear selector pin was put back in after the shift linkage end was slid over the gear selector, I would think without this pin it would be damn near impossible to get it into gear reliably, but its worth looking into.
Some aftermarket urethane bushings would be a good investment as well.

I would crawl underneath the car and take a look at the bushing right at the trans. Moke sure the bushing is in good shape and the nut or bolt (can't remember which) is tight.

Nope, Honda transmissions are internally gated, there's no Big H like on the Lamborghinis.
Something tells me it's not actually going into 3rd and 5th, just moving around alot. Look for loose bolts or worn bushings.
And for gods sake, check the fluid! I hope you're not driving the thing with no fluid...

Yea I installed one. The pin that I baught looks dfferent though. Mine is the pin that has holes on it where you slide a thing in there to make it lock. The OEM one doesnt have the holes and is a bitch to install or remove.

Yea Im not driving it. My cars been down for 4 weeks now just because of this problem.
Oh yea, one more thing, I replaced the front bushings with a kinda new stock one and it didnt help but make it more stable. I dont think the bushings has anything to do with it. I mean come on now, how can those 2 bushings that isnt even connected to the gear selector or shifter make it lock in gear?

i bet thats your problem, you have to use the oem bitch pin, cause any minimal play in the linkage by the pin is going to make a very sloppy shifter.

Yea thats true. I checked the gear selector and it was fine. It locked up when I put it into gear without using the shift linkage. Im gonna get me a short shifter and a new pin. Ill let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks a lot people. Its my first time posting here and damn you guys replied quick. Thanks again.
