Help me pass smog!
95 bmw 325i with 50k miles.
%CO2 %O2 HC (PPM)
Test RPM Measured Measured Max Ave Measured
15 mph 1949 14.7 0.2 85 12 99
25 mph 1906 14.7 0.2 50 5 50
As you can see I barely failed the HC portion of the test. What can I do to pass?
Thanks,
CB

well, i won't be able to comment on the bmw's engine or fuel management, but with our hondas, we can fiddle with the fuel pressure regulator (if you have one, like a b&m or aem for example), or if you have the v-afc or s-afc you can lean out the air/fuel mixture that way.
No such thing on this car. I think I'll just start with plugs, wires, cap rotor, fuel cleaner, and some pass smog in a bottle.
I was trying to look for some concrete answer that I know will work. The shop wanted $70 per hour to diagnose the problem!
Screw that,

if there is some way to change ignition timing then retard the timing 3 or 4 degrees. check to make sure the plugs are in good condition. fill it up with premium fuel and beat the hell out of it just before you take it in to get re-tested. make sure the engine/cat-converter is really hot.
that should work..............also i've seen that stuff made by CRC called Guaranteed to Pass do wonders if you follow the directions correctly.......
good luck

what you do is go to the local gas station pay the bumbkin working there and have one of your buddies with a car that passed and have him put all your info in and then move your car and put his in and run it instead
that is what me and cimorellicrx did to get his to pass and that got a ticket dropped the next day so it works out he paid a total of 32.50 for all of it

I dont know **** about BMW's, but if you can retard the timing slightly, to make it run like crap, you will pass. I had a 87 Trans Am, and it woudlnt pass smog from the aftermarket parts and internals i used. So i retared the timing by turning the distributer, and it passed. Might want to check into this if you can retard your timing.
I barely failed to so I don't think I'll need to do too much. I changed out the plugs and going to use some X66-A and clean out the motor. I am confident it will work.
I believe that the car was still too cold before I handed the car over. I only live a block away from the smog facility. Also the thermostat in the Bimmer is broken in the open position. The motor takes a bit longer to warm up.
This car is my wifes car and she won't let me modify it. It's completely stock.
My mother inlaw's 92 325i is fixed up. I think it has a Racing Dynamic chip, body kit and 16x8 wheels with 225/45 tire. I installed Eibach Prokit springs and Bilstein shocks. This car looks so good and it handles great. The fenders had to be rolled because the wheels and offset was a bit too wide. Now the rear is tucked like the race cars.
It only has 28k miles. She works 1/4 mile away from home, and rarely goes anywhere far with the car.
I think she is going to give it to me soon.
