Default help with headbolts...

If bolts are stress beyond their yeild strength plastic deformation occurs and the bolt wlll no longer spring back(have clamping pressure). That could be why your bolts were loose.

Repeated tighten and loosening work hardens the bolts and your bolts will lose it's elasticity (clamping ability). You know you have this kind of trouble when you torque down your bolts using a torque wrench and the bolts can never reach specified torque (They just keep turning).

This is true, but it is also a good way to snap off bolts inside your block(pain in the a$$). Another way to tell if your bolts are too stressed or streched is to try to fit the threads of the bolts together. ex. L7 That way you will be able to see if they have streched. The slightest difference will cause the threads not to fit and will give you problems down the road.
