Default Help

I have been trying to get our fuel injected 92 Honda accord running, it stalled, it will turn over but will not start, so that rules out the starter, the fuel pump comes on, I have replaced the fuel filter, still won't start, the distributor cap looked toasted, replaced, still won't start, checked the coil, reads good, had the Icm tested, they said it is bad, replaced it, still won't start, I was going to check the codes, except I already pulled the battery to charge it. My understanding is It won't bring up codes until It is running, is that correct? Not sure where to go next , any help would be great.

not true. it will bring up codes without it running. crank it over and try starting it again, then keep the ignition on after cranking it for a couple seconds and with the ignition still on (not cranking) jump the service connector and the cel will flash out any codes.

Use a stethoscope on the injectors to hear if they are firing, if they are, your have a spark, compression or timing problem. You can pull a plug and inspect for wet fuel as well.

Check for spark, if spark is present you have a timing problem. If you dont have spark, the ignitor, coil, and distributor cap are suspect.

If they aren't, a main relay problem may be evident.

When did the engine last run? What were the condition when it stopped?

The engine ran about 4 months ago, it was running a little funny, threatening to stall, then it finally did, I have been keeping the battery charged, do I need to prime the fuel system next time I try to start it?

I wasn't able to pull any codes, I checked for spark, and yes I have spark.
Hmm where do I look next?

How would I know if it is a timing problem?

So I do have spark at the first plug, where does that leave me? Could it still be a electrical problem or is it a fuel problem, currently I have replaced the fuel filter, dist cap( visual on rotor is good), Icm, the coil checked good, I can hear the fuel pump come on ( does that rule out the poss of the main relay being bad) the starter will turn over but no fire? I don't want to give up. What should I do next?a

Having spark is useless unless it occurs at the right time.

Remove the valve cover and inspect the timing belt. If you use a test lamp on the ignition primary ground you should see a pulsing signal, of not the cam or timing belt is broken.

Do you have fuel?

Check for fuel, you say you have spark at all 4 cylinders, so now check for fuel, after trying to start the engine remove the spark plugs and inspect the ends, are they "wet" with gas?

If so, do a compression test, if good, [you need fuel/spark/compression for an engine to run] check valve and ign. timing. 94

Thanks fcm, I didn't check for spark on all pugs yet, I need to get the proper tester, then I will check that, then check for fuel, and may as well check the compression while I am at it. If nothing else I will learn how to test vehicles
