Default Headwork/valve seals

ok i have been searching for 3 days and i can't get a clear answer.

not long ago i had my head(p75) on a b20 resurfaced for a headgasket replacement. there is shavings from the machining in the head so i want to take it to get jet washed(big dishwasher thing not hot tank). i called two shops and got contradicting info.

when i called pete kelly's auto from what they told me it would be $20 and its safe to have the engine washed with the valves installed(said they always do it that way) and that my valve seals would be fine. this will take 30 mins

however when i called a second shop Hempelman's and they said it would be 250 for a valve job and washing because they wont wash it with the head assembled and the seals HAVE to be changed. this will take 3 weeks

my question is which is the correct info.

second shop sounds like they trying to make a quick buck off you, there are no reasons why you can't do it with the head fully assembled. unless this process involved using acid to clean the head.

both could be right.

It depends on what chemical they use in their parts washer/hot tank

Honestly if your going to clean the head, you might as well take the head completely apart & clean it properly. If your too lazy or don't think that's required, then just clean the outside of the head with brake cleaner.

valve seals are like $20 for all 16.

.... when you tear down head to wash & reassemble you do not need to do valve job, so if your not wanting a valve job then they should be trying to sell you it.

... if you just need the head decked, you would want to washed throughly (just make sure cleaning detergent used inside the parts washer will not eat away at plastic), use compressed air to clean out all the ports, oil holes and passages. Don't worry about the black carbon buildup, your main concern is cleaning out any extra shaving material.
