4-1 gives the greatest gains at the high end with some expense at the bottom end. 4-2-1 gives good gains at the midrange. The 4-2-1 header generally does not have any clearance issues with the front crossmember. 4-1 headers sometimes have clearnace issues with the front crossmember and how low they sit. I would personally go with a 4-2-1 header if the car is just a daily driver. If your car lives in the upper rpm range get a 4-1.
Just my 2 cents

So, here's my question: Why does it make any difference? I mean, I would think that 4-1 headers would give the greatest gains at all engine speeds simply because they offer the lowest restriction. I would think also that 4-2-1s seem better in the midrange only because power production gets choked off at high engine speed. Does anyone have any dyno plots showing the difference between the two? Sorry to ask such n00b questions, just wondering. Yes, I did a search, and it led me here.
