well i got the lsvtec to run okay https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1335110 but now theres a tapping clacking noise in the head on cylinder 1. what could it be? can over tightening the gap of the valve adjustment cause this? it didnt make this noise when it was loose. also my exhaust putts and sputters like crazy at idle.. what could be causing this? thanks

actually i was checking it again today and i kno for sure its coming from cylinder 3 on the intake side.. and the noise is like on and off. do u think i need to tighten it or loosen it?
well when you do a valve adjustment to get rid of ticking you usually tighten them to get rid of excessive clearance so i doubt its b/c one is too tight. But recheck your clearances for sure.
Did you check your LMA's (lost motion assembly) before installing the cams? The ticking noise could be a worn LMA.

yep just did another valve adjustment just waiting on my spark plug wires to get it started and see if the noise went away. if it doesnt i guess it could be my lma's. what do you think about how the exhaust putts and sputters at idle? it also smells like its running rich.
check to make sure that the vacuum line on the MAP sensor is connected. Or maybe the MAP sensor is malfunctioning. I know when my buddies MAP was pooched his car ran like a bag, sputtering, smoking, you could smell gas in the exhaust big time, then he replaced it and bam all better. And the other day it ran like that with the vacuum line disconnected. Its an external MAP sensor on the firewall (91 SI w/b16).
Are you getting any codes?

well the map sensor was off my ls and i know its in working order. i hooked the internal ls map sensor with a vacuum line to the nipple on the b16 head since it needs a external one. could that cause a problem? wouldnt it throw a engine light if it had a problem with the map sensor? im not throwing any codes right now

yeah im gonna adjust them again today. what do you think about the exhaust putts? you think its just running rich cause of the basemap and causing the exhaust to putt at idle and my plugs to be black?
the map sensor vacuum line should go to a nipple on the throttle body.
My buddies car wasn't throwin any codes when his MAP was busted. Go to a pick and save junkyard and take one from any 88-95 civic with an external map on the firewall. This is what we did, we took a few just in case.
Are you sure that there were no bent valves when you put the head on the block?
Do a compression test and see what your results are....then post em.

im pretty sure the map sensor is okay besides using it as a external one. it worked fine on the ls head as a internal. didnt really check for bent valves but does bent valves cause these types of symptoms? is there any other symptoms i should be looking for also? right now im getting low idle, exhaust putts at idle, spark plugs are dry black, and it smells like its running rich.
a bent valve will cause your engine to run real crappy, b/c it would be loosing compression in which ever cylinder has the bent valve(s).
All those symptoms are what my buddies car was doing when his map was busted, except for the low idle.
Do a compression test, that'll help determine if you have a bent valve.

havent checked the compression just yet but i did get it to idle a bit better. replaced the iavc on the b16 with the ls one on my old head, clean out the throttle body with carb cleaner, and shorten the map sensor hose. now it actually tries to warm up when i first start it.. b4 it just used to turn on like it was already warm and the car would shake. also the exhaust smell isnt as bad but its still there and the putts are not as much. who knew these little things could help haha
